S5 Skincare uses ingredients from Antarctica, the Wadi Desert in Egypt and the high mountains of Tibet. In combining nature with science and clinical studies, they aim to solve five key skin concerns naturally. Founder Laura Rudoe speaks to us about her extraordinary organic cosmeceuticals brand.

You first launched S5 Skincare in 2012. Can you introduce us to the brand and what makes you special?

S5 is designed to solve skin problems naturally using the strength of ingredients found in the most extreme parts of the planet such as Antarctica, the Wadi Desert in Egypt and the high mountains of Tibet. Our bioactives have naturally evolved to be strong and resilient to extreme environmental stress over millions of years.

When used on the skin, this resilience helps your skin cope with the stresses of modern living, such as pollution, UV and EMF radiation, chemical irritation and environmental damage. Reducing stress on the skin helps the skin stay in a health balance and reduces the likelihood of skin problems such as sensitivity, redness, blemishes and premature ageing.

Our five treatment serums are designed for the five skin concerns we often see: blemishes, sensitivity, dryness, hyper-pigmentation and premature ageing. The serums can be mixed and matched together to make a uniquely tailored skin regime that works for you and can be adapted and amended depending on how your skin feels or the season.

S5 Serum Range

Where did the name come from?

The range is all about skin solutions (5 skin problems, 5 skin solutions), skin sensitivity, and is built around 5 serums. We sourced the ingredients from 5 different sources…. Lots of S’s and lots of 5’s in the concept, so we came up with S5!

Can you talk us through some of the key ingredients that you use in your products and how they prove themselves to be effective in solving skin concerns such as blemishes, sensitivity, dry skin, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles?

All actives are backed up by robust clinical studies, scientifically proven in vivo.

Arctic: Organisms in Antarctica produce glycoproteins to prevent their cells from being crushed by the extreme cold. When used on the skin, they dramatically strengthen the cellular matrix and reduce wrinkle depth by up to 44% and increase collagen production by up to 128%. Found in S5 Renew Serum.

Desert: Organisms in the Wadi Desert, one of the driest places on the planet, produce glycoproteins that protect them against heat, frost, dryness and environmental stress. When used on skin, they form a protective shield around the cells, stabilising the cellular membrane, helping to rebuild cell walls and increasing hydration by 30%. Found in S5 Restore Cream and in the Calm Serum.

Hundreds of Alpine herbs were screened to find the ones best at reducing hyper-pigmentation.

Alpine: Hundreds of Alpine herbs were screened to find the ones best at reducing hyper-pigmentation. This seven-Alpine plant blend has been shown in human clinical trials to increase the appearance of skin lightness by 15% and reduce the appearance of age spot colour intensity by 28.6%. Found in the S5 Illuminate Serum.

Marine: Laminaria seaweed reduces inflammation and immune ageing. It reduces UV damage and also protects against EMF and UVA radiation. It has been clinically proven to boost the skin barrier layer. Found in the S5 Restore Cream, the Balance Fluid and the Illuminate Serum.

Rainforest: Brazilian Picão Preto has been shown in human clinical trials to reduce the appearance of blemishes by 42% and sebum by 65%, making it the perfect constituent to effectively treat oily and acne prone skin. Found in the S5 Purity Serum.

S5 The Replenish Collection

The Replenish Collection

You talk a lot about bioactives – Can you explain what these are?

A bioactive is a compound that has an effect on a living organism, tissue or cell. It has a biological activity and a beneficial effect. Our bioactives are all found in plants.

How do you see the natural beauty market developing over the next three years? What key things should we be looking out for?

The natural skincare market has grown double figures over the last seven years. It represents 13% of the global beauty market (according to consultancy company Kline). There is certainly an increase in customer awareness of chemicals. The natural skincare beauty market is likely to follow the parallel of the food business, which has seen an extraordinary expansion over the last 20 years! However, customers still want efficacy and we believe that the category that will grow the strongest is products that combine science with nature – organic, if possible. With S5, we only use highly effective actives that are known to have a specific result on the skin. This allows us to create more efficacious products whilst keeping up with the mainstream trends.

Tailored beauty is also something that is close to our heart; being able to make your own beauty solution. We have always pushed that angle with S5; being able to mix and match the serums to create your own ‘wardrobe’ of beauty treatments. Mix some S5 Replenish Serum in your moisturiser to make it more nourishing, or add a few drops of your Illuminate Serum in your Renew Serum to ally strong anti-ageing with brightness… We have a few boosters in development, which will let you do just that… Tailor your beauty regime to your skin’s needs.
