Greater focus on health concerns from own-label products

The expert food and drink panel overseeing The Grocer Own Label Awards 2017 have commented on the amount of own-label products now paying greater attention to consumers’ health concerns. With 366 products submitted over 68 categories, all chosen via consumer testing conducted by Cambridge Market Research, the experts had a significant amount to review and consider – with nutrition coming out top for many.

As one of the panelists, Euro Food Brand MD Peter Butler, told The Grocer: many of this year’s entrants had “thought long and hard about nutritional value.” Additionally, Jonny Bingham, who is the director of Bingham & Jones, commented: “We’ve seen some really innovative stuff, especially within free-from.”

Mash Direct director, Jack Hamilton, noted the variety of products that were showing “more traceability and provenance”, with a trend also showing itself for “cleaner” packaging. Clare Blampied, managing director for pesto and pasta sauce brand, Saclà UK, noted that own-label items were setting the standard for other brands to “get better and better”. The winners will be announced in mid-May with two winners available in each category – one for overall champion and the other for finest innovation. There will also be an overall champion of champions announced.
